Coorg or Kodagu, as called in Kannada, is a beautiful place in the state of Karnataka. This place in South India can be primarily termed as an agricultural land as the economy primarily thrives on the rice, coffee and other various plantation products that is cultivated widely. In terms of natural beauty, Coorg is definitely outstanding. Coorg boasts of colorful flora, a diverse wildlife, mountains, waterfalls, valleys and unending expanse of paddy and coffee plantations. Green is the predominant color and soothes your senses. Occupying nearly an area of 4,100 kilometer squares, Coorg is located on the eastern slopes of the Western Ghats in south west Karnataka.

The origin of the place name can be attributed to various sources. The place finds mention in the Puranas where it is described as a ‘Land of Anger’ owing to the fact that Kodagu refers to Krodha Desa(Krodha is anger). Other derivations state that the place got its name from the Kannada term ‘kudu’ which means hilly or steep. The last derivation is associated with the river Kaveri as it is the main river draining Coorg. As believed, Kodagu is a derivation from Kodava where ‘Kod ‘stands for ‘give’ and ‘avva’ refers to ‘mother’.

The place seems isolated but then this is the real charm of Coorg. Tourists visit this place to get some solace and the calm surroundings offer it in abundance. The place is absolutely great for some trekking and walking holidays. The three main festivals namely Kailpodhu, Kaveri Sankramana and Puttari are the prime attractions of Coorg. October to April is the best time to visit Coorg.
