Often hailed as Scotland of India, Coorg in Karnataka has become a hot tourist destination in recent years. Locally called Kodagu, this place is dramatically beautiful in its isolation. The scenic beauty is enough to bewitch you while there are plenty of attractions to keep you occupied for a long time. The presence of a number of hotels and home stays rules out any problem of accommodation. So just sit back and enjoy one of the most remarkable holidays of your life.
The dense forests and the hilly terrain of Coorg are home to a number of wild animals. This has resulted in the development of a number of wildlife sanctuaries and national parks in Coorg. Not only does this help in the conservation of wildlife but these are great places to watch the animals in their natural habitat. Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary, Talakaveri Wildlife Sanctuary and Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary are the three sanctuaries while the Nagarahole or Rajiv Gandhi National Park is the only National park in Coorg.
The place of origin of the River Kaveri is yet another interesting place to visit and is called Talakaveri. Next in prominence come two waterfalls. One is named Abbey Falls and the other Iruppu Falls. Iruppu Falls is located in South Kodagu or Coorg and is considered a holy spot due to a legend associated to it. Situated on a range of hills named Brahmagiri, it is believed that the river Lakshmanatirtha which descends as Iruppu Falls was brought into existence by Lakshmana, the younger brother of Lord Rama when he asked for some water to drink. Believed to have the power to cleanse one’s sins, devotees flock to this place on Shivaratri to get a holy dip. There is even a temple dedicated to Lord Rama. A training camp for elephants belonging to the Forest Department at Dubare and the confluence point of Kanika, Kaveri and Sujyothi rivers named Bhagamandala are two more places of tourist importance.
