What to See in Khajuraho

The structures prevalent in the temples of Khajuraho, not only depicts human forms, but other institutions of society like marriage, kinship, war and royalty. Human emotions like love and passion are also noticeable. Deities of gods and goddesses and their creations in the animal and human world are interestingly depicted. Genuine and timeless works of art, the temples at Khajuraho are numerous and is divided in groups. The largest and the most beautiful ones are categorized as the Western Group of Temples followed by the Eastern Group of temples and the Southern Group of temples.

Among the Western Group of Temples, the most outstanding one is the Lakhmana Temple. The most notable feature of this temple is the horizontal beam at the entrance which depicts the holy trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Goddess Lakshmi is also seen gracing the structure with the other three respected Gods of Hinduism. The Devi Jagdamba Temple, Chausat Yogini Temple, Kandariya Mahadeo Temple, Matanageswara Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and the Chitragupta Temple built for the Sun God are other notable temples belonging to this group.

The Ghantai Temple, Adinath Temple, Parsvanath Temple, Hanuman Temple, Javari Temple, Vamana Temple and the Brahma Temple fall under the Eastern group of Temples. The granite and sandstone temple dedicated to Lord Brahma is considered one of the oldest temples of Khajuraho.

The Southern Group of Temples makes for the last group among which the Chattarbhuj Temple or the Jatkari Temple dating back to the 1100 A.D is a marvel of architecture and is well known for the 9 feet idol of Vishnu. The Dulhadev Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and another famous temple belonging to this group is the Beejamandal Temple.

The Light and Sound Show held daily at the site of the Western Group of Temples is another major attraction here.

The Khajuraho Dance Festival is another grand event that brings a good number of tourists to this city in Madhya Pradesh.
