The Salt Lake City in Kolkata is one of the most developed townships within the city. The Salt Lake City is well planned and is divided into several blocks. The center is also known as Bidhan Nagar at the honour of the former Chief Minister of West Bengal, Bidhan Chandra Roy. The township is a part of downtown Kolkata and is equipped with highly developed dwelling amenities.
The Salt Lake city in Kolkata was established in the year 1962. The place was so named because a Yugoslavian firm was specially appointed to develop the place by filling up the salty swamps and lakes by sand. It took about four decades to turn the area into one of the most important commercial and convenient residential locations in the city adept with modern urban facilities.
At the center of the Salt Lake City, there is a hexagonal park and the surrounding land is segregated into blocks. A channel of the original Hoogly River known as the Keshtopur Canal passes along the three sides of the city. The city also features huge areas of wetlands that are frequented by exotic migratory birds from north.

The City Center consists of shopping malls, multiplex theatre and gourmet corners for food and drinks. The Swabhumi is the center of Indian art and culture and is accounted as the best heritage park in eastern Kolkata. Relatively free from pollution, the Salt City has one of largest sports stadiums in India, the Yuva Bharati Krirangan. Among top quality hotels, the renowned Hyatt Regency Hotel is located in this region. Nicco Park, the first recreational space in Eastern India is situated in the sector 4 of the Salt Lake. The Nalban Boating Complex and the Central Park is also located in this area. Central Park which is also commonly known as Banabitan is the largest urban park after Maidan in Kolkata.
The nearest international airport from Salt Lake City is just 4 kms away. Even though the region is devoid of railway services and subway transportation facilities, the area has a well developed road ways system.
