A distinctive holy destination, Varanasi has a charm of its own. There is something unique about the place which makes people visit this place at least once in their life time. The main attraction of Varanasi is the River Ganga itself. At the same time the city which is known as the city of temples, is home to a number of temples dedicated to various Gods. Supreme architectures, legends and locations make these temples worth a visit. The innumerable Ghats are the focus points around which life revolves in this city. Devotees taking baths and performing rituals in the early mornings, aartis in the evenings and simply seeing the ascetics meditating on the ghats are pictures that make you feel that Varanasi is a different world together. So if you are in search of solitude, then Varanasi is definitely a great place to be.

The Vishwanath Temple is the main attraction of Varanasi. A strong belief among the Hindus, a visit to this place will wash away all the sins from your soul. According to Hindu mythology, the sacred grounds of Varanasi were created by Lord Shiva and his wife, Goddess Parvati. Rebuilt by Rani Ahilya Bai of Indore in the year 1776, this temple is the highest living symbol of our traditions, religious belief and spiritual values. This temple is also known as the Golden Temple. The Durga Temple is placed adjacent to this temple and is dedicated to Goddess Durga.

Other notable temples in Varanasi are Sankat Mochan Temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman, Tulsi Manas Temple and the Nepali Hindu Temple which is notable for its architecture. It is located near the Lalit Ghat.

The Ghats are integral to Varanasi’s identity. The actual place to catch all the activity is these numerous Ghats. The primary ghat is the Manikarnika Ghat which is the main ghat for cremations. Then there is the Panchganga Ghat which marks the meeting of five rivers. The Dasaswamedh Ghat is the best place to see the evening aarti while the site of the water purification unit is the Tulsi Ghat. Other notable Ghats include Assi Ghat, Rana Ghat, Kedar Ghat, Shivala Ghat, Hanuman Ghat and Harishchandra Ghat.

A seat of ancient learning, a visit to the Benaras Hindu University is a must. Other places of tourist importance include the Man Mandir Observatory, Alamgir Mosque.
