Historical past of Auroville

The basic concept behind the development of Auroville was to form an ideal city which was devoted towards the unification of mankind. The concept of mankind unification was originally of The Mother, 'Mirra Alfassa'. Later on, the proposal of formation of this ideal city rose in the times of mid 1960's by the Aurobindo Society and henceforth with the consent of the mother and Indian government the project was finalized. The concept in the later stages was taken to General Assembly of UNESCO, and there it gained approval and was then commended in 1966.
