Pushkar that is located 11 kms from Ajmer at its North West side is a sacred city for the Hindus. India's famous epics Ramayana and Mahabharata have reference of this city and an 'Adi Tirtha' (Old Pilgrimage) for the Hindus. There is evidence of the existence of the lake in Pushkar even in the fourth century B.C. The great poet Kalidas was also fascinated by this city and there is reference of Pushkar in his classic - Abhigyan Sakuntalam. Pushkar is considered to be holy place for the Hindus. Pushkar temples are known for their pious appeal. There are many famous temples in the city that are visited by thousands of Hindu pilgrims throughout the year. But it is the month of November on the Kartick Purnima that Pushkar sees maximum number of pilgrims on the occasion of Pushkar Fair. Following are some of the most visited temples in Pushkar.

Brahma Temple - The Brahma temple in Pushkar is the most famous temple in the city and perhaps the only temple in the world that is dedicated to Lord Brahma. It is the most visited Hindu pilgrimage in Pushkar and the centre of activities during the famous Pushkar Fair. The temple is located beyond two lakes Nagaparvat and Anasagar. According to Hindu beliefs Lord Brahma along with all other gods performed a Yagna at the place. The temple that is located near the Pushkar Lake is made with white marble and decorated with silver coins. There is a silver turtle at the floor of the temple. The walls of the temple are beautifully decorated with the images of peacock and Saraswati, wife of Brahma. There is a life sized idol of Lord Brahma at the temple with four faces facing the four directions. Swan is the carrier of Lord Brahma and it is depicted spanning at the gate of the temple with a red spire around it. The small idol of Gayatri who is goddess of milk and wife of Brahma is placed beside the statue of Brahma at the temple. This idol is called the Chaumurti.

Savitri Temple - This temple is dedicated to the first wife of Lord Brahma - Savitri. The temple is located at the top of the hill behind the Brahma temple in Pushkar. Pilgrims have to climb hundreds of steps to reach the temple. From the temple you can get a panoramic view of the Pushkar Lake amidst the sand dunes.

Varah temple - This temple has the idol of Varah that is the body of a man with the face of a bear. The temple was built in the 12th Century but it was destroyed by Emperor Aurangzeb. It was further reconstructed by Raja Sawai Jai Singh II in the year 1727.

Mahadeva temple - It is one of the most beautiful temples in Pushkar that was built in the 19th Century. The temple has a huge statue of Lord Mahadev with five faces and traditional tufts of hair.

Ramavaikunth Temple - One of the most intricate temple structures of Pushkar, this temple was built in the year 1920. The temple has beautifully sculptured images of 361 deities.
