Dal Lake
Dal Lake forms the main attraction of Srinagar. Its beauty and magnificence is unparalleled. Wular Lake
Wular Lake is credited to be amongst the largest fresh water lake in Asia and the largest lake in India. It is situated at a distance of 32 kilometers to the northwest of Srinagar. The formation of Wular Lake is known to be a consequence of a tectonic activity. Wular Lake covers an area of about 200 square kms. From season to season, the surface area of the lake keeps varying. A natural reservoir is provided by the flood water of the River Jhelum.
The deepest part of the lake is identified as Mota Khon that means the 'Gulf of corpses'. There is an artificial island of the lake that is famous as a picnic spot. There are high mountain ranges in the northeastern side of the lake. The Lake houses about fifty species of aquatic animals and many migratory and local birds. Alpine pastures, coniferous forests and orchards add to the spectacular sight of the lake.
To the inhabitants of the Kashmir valley, the lake holds great importance. Under the Wetlands Programme of the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India; the lake was designated as a Wetland of National Importance in 1986 for its management and conservation. Under the Ramsar Convention, the Lake was assigned as a Wetland of International Importance in the year 1990.
Manasbal Lake
Manasbal Lake is considered to be the 'supreme gem of all Kashmir lakes'. It lies at a distance of 30 kms north of Srinagar. This lake is the only lake that develops stable summer stratification. There are remnants of an old Mughal fort built in the 17th century near the northern shore of the Lake. The reason and the source of the origin of the Lake are still shrouded in mystery but it can be said with surity that it belongs to the ancient period. Legend says that Manasbal Lake is bottomless. The lake has the boundary of exotic flowers around it that make it all the more special.
Nagin Lake
Nagin Lake stands with pride amongst the most beautiful and admired lakes in Srinagar. The lake provides the facility to stay in a houseboat floating on it and offering you magnificent views of the Himalayas all the time you are in the houseboat. You have floating markets here that sell fruits, vegetables, flowers and sometimes Tibetan jewellery also but the last one would not be being sold all the time.
