Trekking Karjat to Matheran in Maharashtra
- Day 1
- Karjat-Ambewadi Village-Matheran
Take a Karjat-Chowk road to Vaverle village. From here, walk to Bhorgaon village lying at Matheran's base. If you want to have a cross country route, you'll have to ford a wide stream to Bhorgaon.
Before entering Bhorgaon, a path takes you up to Ambewadi Village. From here, a path comes from Varosa village on the spur's other side. It climbs to a flat area. Big Chowk point is clearly visible here. Now the track takes you to Shivaji Steps/Shivaji Ladder. Ascend to the top from here and you'll see One Tree Hill here, connected to Matheran by a narrow ridge. Turn right and come to Matheran. There are many comfortable options here to spend the night.
If you are heading to Mumbai, aim at Dasturi Naka and tread down to Neral. Postman's short cut gives a quick descent. Carry on this route and you are at the outskirts of Neral. You reach Neral Station after a kilometer. From here, you can get a local train to Mumbai.

- Matheran-Bhorgaon-Karjat
A few kilometers from the Matheran market is Ram Bagh Point. It is on the way to Little Chowk Point. From here, a wide path drops the hillside in a gently meandering course. Tread on for a kilometer to reach a flat forested stretch. The path bifurcates when you are almost below Little Chowk Point. Of the forked trail, catch the one to the left. It drops down the ridge, then across some hillocks and fields before entering Bhorgaon village or you can follow the road to Karjat or take an auto rickshaw to Karjat.
Trekking Options :
- Take a Karjat bound local train to reach Vangani Station. From here, you can trek to Vaghachi Wadi, Nakhind-Chanderi col and Panvel Lake. From here, there are two routes up to Matheran-Porcupine Point (Milk trail), the other climbs running to east.
- Climb from Neral to Peb Fort, then follow the railway line into Matheran.
- Trek Garbet Plateau and Garbet Point.
- Trek from Chowk village to Varosa Village. Then climb to Matheran via Shivaji Steps.
- Start at Lonavla, go on to Rajmachi, Bhairi Caves, Dhak Fort, Karjat and Matheran.
- Move from Karnala in the south-west, cross-country to Matheran.
- Trek Prabal Fort and Irshal which are opposite Matheran.
