Lakes in Udaipur

The beautiful lakes of Udaipur make this city extremely beautiful. As a result, it is sometimes referred as "City of Lakes".

Lake Pichola - Lake Pichola of Udaipur is an artificial fresh water lake that was first created in the year 1362 by Pichhu Banjara, a gypsy and it was named after the local village Picholi. The lake got its present form over the centuries. Presently there are two major islands on the lake - the Jag Niwas and the Jag Mandir. There are other smaller islands that have formed over the time. There are many palaces like the Lake Palace that has been transformed into a luxury hotel, marble temples like the Mohan temple and family mansions are built at these islands.

Fateh Sagar Lake - Fateh Sagar Lake is the pride of Udaipur. This artificial lake that was built by Maharana Jai Singh in the year 1678 is located at the north of Lake Pichola and at the north west of the Udaipur city. There are three small islands within the Fateh Sagar Lake. The largest amongst them is the Nehru Park where there is a garden, restaurant and a zoo. Another island has a public park and a water jet fountain. The other island has the Udaipur Solar Observatory. Apart from adding to the beautiful landscape of Udaipur the lake also supports the ground water recharge, drinking water, agricultural use, industrial use and provides employment to 60% population of Udaipur.

Jaisamand Lake - Jaisamand Lake which is also known as Dhebar is the second largest artificial lake in Asia. In the year 1685 this lake was built by Maharana Jai Singh while constructing the dam over Gomti River. The summer palace of the queens of Udaipur forms a picturesque backdrop for the lake. There are six beautifully carved marble cenotaphs on the embankment. At the northern side of lake there is a marble palace and on the southern shore there is pavilion of 12 pillars. There are seven islands within the lake that are still inhabited by the Bhil Mina tribe.

Rajsamand Lake - Rajsamand Lake is located at the north of Udaipur between Rajnagar and Kankroli. The lake which is also known as the Rajsamudra Lake was built by Maharana Raj Singh in the year 1660. Gomti River is the source of water in the lake and there is also a dam that is built in the 17th century. The southern embankment of the lake is made with white marble and the stone steps touch the water of the lake.

Udai Sagar Lake - Located at 13 km east of Udaipur, the Udai Sagar Lake is another major lake in Udaipur. Maharana Udai Singh started the construction of the lake in the year 1559 that was completed in the year 1565. The lake was built as a result of the dam that was being built on Berach River at that time.

Apart from these, other popular lakes around the city of Udaipur are smaller lakes such as Doodh Talai, Jiyan Sagar and Swaroop Sager that add to the glory of Udaipur.
