It is said that the path to salvation and God is not easy. Times were different when pilgrims used to travel many a miles to reach the holy pilgrimage destinations. But with developments in the world of transport and communication, reaching the far flung destinations is relatively easier. One such place in the stare of Uttar Pradesh is the holy city of Varanasi. Better known as Kashi or Benaras, it is the abode of the Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and self content in itself. Pilgrims and tourists alike will find reaching this colorful but slightly isolated city easy as a number of trains, flights and bus services link it with the outer world.

Trains were and will remain to be the most comfortable and cheap mode of transport. A good number of trains connect Varanasi with other cities like Kolkata, Delhi, Agra and Lucknow. The long distance trains mostly make their arrivals at the Varanasi Junction. However some trains like the Shatabdi Express and the Rajdhani Express make departures from the Mughal Serai Station located at a distance of 15 kilometers in the east of the city.

Direct flights are also available to Varanasi. The Varanasi airport is situated at a distance of 25 kilometers from the city. National carriers like Indian Airlines, Air Sahara, Kingfisher Airlines, Spice Jet and Jet Airways have flights to Delhi. Indian Airlines and Air Sahara provide direct flights to Mumbai. A good number of local bus services connect Varanasi with the Nepal border and other neighboring areas. The local buses leave for destinations like Gorakhpur from where connecting buses are available to the border area at Sonauli. State run buses connect Varanasi to Allahabad, Kanpur and Lucknow.
